I absolutely partake in this love of the new, I think it is part of human nature, and growing up in consumerist culture it is almost programmed into us to seek out novelty and 'newness'. But humans are also creatures of habit and lovers of comfort, and I think it is equally in our nature to become emotionally attached to objects, to hoard and love and use and care for items that we feel are precious for whatever reason. I feel like the absurd abundance of stuff that we have access to today can tend to lessen the importance of objects to us, particularly how cheap everything is. It's easy to develop a throwaway attitude because as soon as something begins to look old and tatty you can replace it again for next to nothing. Forget about good as new, just get more new! I think that the popularity of vintage though shows that we do still have an interest in more 'special' individual objects over the 'new'; things that have a bit of history or meaning to them. I like to think of people in centuries past, before we had access to a never ending supply of affordable everything, and what clothes and objects would have meant to them. A dress would feel a lot more special for a lot longer when you only owned three or four of them!
I am not suggesting we should return to such times by any means. I do have a bit of a fascination though with clothing 'staples'. My absolute dream would be to design a dress or item that someone loved so much and felt so comfortable in that it became a staple for them. Perhaps it wouldn't seem so very special or impressive to them because they wore it so much, but the very idea of making something that you feel so comfortable in, that you can pull it on no matter what mood and feel good fills me with excitement! On top of this, having something you will wear over and over is an awful lot kinder to the environment than having a throwaway wardrobe that one gets bored of with each passing trend. I want to try and make clothes that will last a bit longer!

I am definitely aware though that my 'staples' are likely to be very different to your 'staples', and so we reach the point of this post! I want to know what kind of clothing makes a 'go-to' item for you.
As thanks for your thoughts, I am having a giveaway for any one item of your choice in the shop (etsy or bigcartel, it's up to you!) To enter, all you need to do is comment here, telling me something about what makes a clothing staple for you. You can tell me what your favourite go-to item is in your wardrobe, or maybe a dream item that you feel would pull a lot of outfits together, or your thoughts on what makes the perfect dress shape, anything you like! For extra entries, you can share this post on facebook (don't forget to tag Frances Baker / @hifrancesbaker so I know and can enter you.) Don't forget to leave me a way to contact you in your comment :)
Entries close at 9pm Australian EST on Sunday May 27th. I will pick the winner by putting names in a hat because it will be way more fun for me than a random generator. (Multiple entry people get their names in extra times of course).

What makes something a staple for me is its ability to be worn with lots of other garments and still look new, fresh or classic. For me my black and white striped breton 3/4 sleeve tee would have to be my ultimate staple. I opshopped it for 50c a year or so back and it has been worn countless times since. I see b&w stripes as a basic, so I wear it with printed 50s skirts, under pinafore dresses, and with embroidered 70s skirts. It always gives a bit of 60s-new-wave-cinema-esque charm to my outfits, I think!
ReplyDeletesomething that is a staple to me is something i can never get tired of. i may not where it every day perhaps but always manage to come back to it. great post btw, since i talk about staples and basics a lot and enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the matter.
ReplyDeleteoh josie! it'd be so hard for me to pick just one thing from your collections. i'd really want that entire outfit of the dreamers blouse and the shirt pictured above. but if i had to, i would say the blouse. i love it so much and it actually embodies what i think is a staple piece in any wardrobe because it can be worn so many different ways (layered under a jumper dress, with shorts, or a skirt, under a cardigan, with trousers...) and it fits with my own aesthetic with the lovely oversized collar. i could go on and on. it's vintage, but in a modern way. love it! i'd love to own another piece from you!
ReplyDeletehere's my email. melissasonico@gmail.com
Personally I just can't get past the full skirted dress with loose bodice. It's just so flattering, accentuating all the right curves in all the right ways. Whenever I were a dress like this I always feel beautiful. Not to mention, the twirling effect :)

Great pictures!! I love it!!
ReplyDeleteI think something like your Katie or Katherine dress would be my perfect dress. I love the shape of dresses from the 50s, I love bows, and I think you can wear dresses like that in the summer, when it's sunny, but also under a cardigan and with tights when it's colder.

For me, a staple is a well-made, well-cut white shirt or blouse. It's such an easy item to dress up or down as I can wear it with jeans to a weekend brunch, or with tailored pants or skirt to work. The thing is, though, is that it really needs to fit so that it flatters, otherwise it just looks dumpy. And that is the one stand-out of Frances Baker as a label - everything can be custom-fitted (well, until you get so popular it's no longer viable!)

My staple, or go-to item, is a dress. I am similar to you - I like fitted (but comfy) bodices with full skirts. Flattering and fun at the same time! I am going to be sneaky and mention my second go-to item: ballet flats. I have not yet found an outfit that they don't work with.
ReplyDeleteIf I were to win I would love your "Falling Leaves" Hand printed bamboo sateen dress. It has the perfect shape and those little leaves are too cute!
Thanks for the giveaway!

For me, a staple is nearly always a dress. It's something that I can slip on and feel special without any accessories. It fits perfectly and makes me feel comfortable and confident. If I discover that something has become a staple I try to buy another before it sells out so I have a replacement :) Love your new collection, Frances!
ReplyDeletecubicdreams@hotmail.co.uk
Hello Frances ! It must be the first time I comment here as I discovered your lovely work not long ago.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading this article as I completely share the same thoughts as you about clothes. I like to think that every piece of clothing in my wardrobe has a meaning and a little story. Each garment makes me feel different and depending on my mood I know what will suit me best.
The three things I look at when I make a new purchase are prettiness, quality and comfort. One can't go without the others. I also avoid wearing pale colors (except the classic white shirt which a girl couldn't live without :-) as I am so clumsy I know I will stain the item in no time !
With this in mind I know I can't go wrong and will enjoy my new purchase for a veeery long time.
Most of my clothes become a staple at some point. They are meanly dresses. Oh and I can't live a pair of leggings and my cashmere cardigan when I stay home :-)
As soon as I have discovered your work I knew you made clothes I'd love to wear. I love the ethic behind your brand and everything is so gorgeous (and look comfortable too).
My most favorite piece of all is the "mountain dweller". There is a 60s vibe to it which I simply adore ! My 2nd favorite is the "little squirrel". I love the length and the gold acorn pattern which is to die for.
I wish you all the best on your new collection ! And I can't wait to treat myself with one of your dresses soon.
genevieve.godbout@hotmail.com
I've been trying to limit my new purchases to tried-and-true silhouettes recently! I feel the most comfortable in dresses with a fitted waist and an a-line skirt (whether flowy or straight), because I know I look good in it so I won't be fussing around all day adjusting my clothing. These dresses get the most wear in my wardrobe, and are what I reach for when I wake up with 10 minutes before I need to be out of the house!
ReplyDeleteOops didn't realise my email address isn't displayed! viv_yao@hotmail.com :)
ReplyDeletethis is a little embarassing, but my most worn and loved dress is actually from cotton on... a place i generally loathe. it's rayon, black, sleeveless, buttons up the front with a peter pan collar, gathered waist and full(ish) skirt. i wore it all through summer and now i wear it with striped tops underneath. i'm terrified every time it goes in the wash - i'm certain one day soon it will just fall apart and i'll be bereft. i wish i owned it in about four different colours (and forty different coloured pairs of tights to go with it).
ReplyDeletethis is also a little embarassing(and creepy), but i know you sister and sarah probably various other people i'm sure we both know and we've never met, but i love your blog and your designs. so hi :)
Josephine,
ReplyDeletei always look forward to your blog posts because there is so much care and content that goes into them.
My wardrobe staples seem to be black ponti dresses that cinch at the waist, have three quarter sleeves and full skirts - black has been my most worn colour for as long as i can remember but i'm trying to mix it up a bit these days with some vintage florals. Sometimes i get dressed five or six times before i go out somewhere if i'm not entirely comfortable and i always go back to these dresses because they fit right and i know they look good one me whether i've eaten too much cake that week or not.
And one dream item in my mind is to have a pair of black high waisted, slim cut jeans. I feel like pants are so versatile and good for winter. Pants however looks horrible on me so thats dissapointing. haha.

For me, a clothing staple is something I can put on and not have to worry about it being uncomfortable or whether or not I have something to co-ordinate with it. I have a Gorman corduroy skirt that is my clothing staple. I probably wear it too much but it really is the most perfect piece. Plus… it has pockets! :)
ReplyDeleteA staple for me is most of all versatile. It's comfortable, can be dressed up or down, I don't need special undergarments to wear it, its low maintenance (no dry-cleaning, ironing), it can be worn with allot of my other clothing and most importantly I look great in it!
ReplyDeleteMy staples would be clothes which look good with minimal effort. This means they are made of quality fabrics that age well/keep looking fresh no matter how many times I wash and wear them, that are comfortable to wear (soft the skin and not constricting in style and cut), and don't really need to be ironed before wearing. In terms of colours, I think neutrals and naturals are the easiest - grey, white or off-white, black.
ReplyDeleteI find myself reaching for this heather-grey Italian merino sweater with a ribbed pattern on the sleeves. It is quite thin and light but surprisingly warm, and it is so soft I can wear it next to my skin. It can be rolled up and squashed into a bag, or layered over a tshirt.
Thank you for the giveaway - I love your designs and the fact that you use eco-friendly materials! I could most seeing myself wearing, as a staple the:
- Lucy dip-dyed dress - so cheerful and easy to slip on
and
- the Katy full-skirted 50s style sundress - I love the classic silhouette, and think it would make the perfect little black dress.
A staple for me has a lot to with practicality but also much to do with sentiment. If a certain tshirt or ratty pair of jeans is imbued with a pleasant memory, I'll hold on to it for much longer and mourn its passing when it finally buckles. Also, my staples are my go-to self-esteem boosters - things I can feel good in even on the gross days.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Your attitude towards clothes-making is lovely, and makes me feel even better about supporting your label. :)
hannahdebus@gmail.com
The staple piece of my wardrobe is a black cashmere cardigan that was first my grandmother's, then my mother's, and now mine. I recently changed the buttons to update it a bit, but the slightly cropped and fitted style will always be in fashion.
ReplyDeleteMy go-to items are fitted, stripy jersey 3/4 length t-shirts. I have several of these, in black- and blue- striped with white, and varying widths of stripe. They are so comfortable as the cotton jersey has become more worn with age, and I really feel that they go with everything, especially the wide-legged reproduction 1940s trousers which I am equally fond of wearing (perhaps these are my real wardrobe staple, my equivalent of jeans!). A super-practical outfit that I can work in easily, and which also looks vaguely smart, so I never feel embarrassed in it.
ReplyDeletei think you hit the nail on the head with this entry! my go-tos are my mass collection of striped shirts. i've noticed more and more (especially since i started my daily outfit pics on instagram) that i repeat outfits, or at least variations of them, quite often. it's funny though because for whatever reason i don't feel the need to replace anything, but rather just add to my growing collection whenever im out thrifting! i'm a strong believer in sticking to what works for you and your body type - screw the trends! plus, it's quite satisfying to get to a point where you know what works for your body and style and you can just pick out (or make!) those things fairly easily.
ReplyDeletethose classic shapes you mentioned are definitely my favorites too, which is why i just love the katherine dress. it's definitely going to be a summertime staple for me :)
One of my favorite items in my wardrobe is a long-sleeve, 1950s white dress with a full skirt. It's one of those dresses that you can dress up or down with just a few accessories, which I think is key in a staple item. I am also a huge fan for anything white colored, which is why I adore all of your dresses!
ReplyDeleteI think that your clothing makes such great "staple" clothes because they are so classic and well-made. My absolute favorite from your shop is that Lucy 90s Sundress. Too cute!!
tpaigekitto@hotmail.com
My staple has got to be jeans with a t-shirt. A staple is something I will pull on without needing to give it much thought and when I wear it, I feel comfortable and "me".
ReplyDeleteHello again! Your post intrigued me so much that I wrote about it slightly more in-depth than my reply above, here http://anushkatay.co.uk/2012/05/08/wardrobe-essentials/
ReplyDeleteAnushka x
your clothes are totally items that would be staples in my wardrobe. i dream of them in fact. one of my favorite items in my wardrobe is this dress i got for 10 dollars at a vintage store in texas. i took up the hem by about 5 inches, and took off the 3/4 sleeves, now it's perfect for summer, spring, fall, and winter. it has a huge scalloped collar, and floral print and pockets. dreamy.
ReplyDeletemy favorite dress of yours is the falling leaves dress. i would wear that to shreds.

I have just found your blog and I am in love with your pieces, the are great and really special. At this moment my staple are blouses and jeans, but I am trying to change my way to dress and buy in little beautiful shops like yours.
ReplyDeleteKisses mi email: mothermercuryskisses(@)gmail(dot)com and my blog http://adayinmercurysgirllife.blogspot.com.es
I think my staples are those pieces that make me feel comfy and can go across seasons. For instance, my old pair of navy dungarees paired with a well! worn harley davidson tshirt, mustard cardi from an estate sale and a comfy pair of mocs on my feet
ReplyDeleteHello Miss Josie,
ReplyDeleteI like this question, as I am a constant staple user, guilty of always returning to the same thing. For me its all about comfort, and not just physically being comfortable, (although that helps), but more something that allows you to feel comfortable in any given situation. The ultimate dress up or dress down kind of things. For me, it is a white v-neck t-shirt or singlet, and a pair of well cut high waisted jeans. Sometimes, when im tired or feel like i want to be cosy, they are a perfect combo thrown together with a big baggy jumper and some chucks. Otherwise, tuck the shirt in, add clogs or heels and maybe some lipstick and you can feel an understated kind of sexy. My favourite kind.
NB: I have been buying mens white singlets from The Warehouse in New Zealand in lots of 3 at least once a year since I stole my boyfriends one 7 years ago. I get them sent to me, I have them in grey and black as well, and I get fresh new white ones and keep the old ones for the gym. That is both perhaps a little sad, but most certainly a staple.
Keep up the good work pretty lady x
lisa.crutchley@gmail.com
I'd have to say a staple for me is black leggings (very boring I'm afraid) because they are so comfy & sooo much better than tights. I end up never wearing jeans cos they dig in around my hips & tights are not thick enough, so leggings is the perfect middle ground.
ReplyDeleteWhen I'm at home working another staple for me is a skirt with big deep pockets & an elasticated waist. It's so good to carry things around in when I'm working & I sort of use it like an old fashioned pinny.
I've been thinking a lot at the moment about making myself a 'uniform' or something I can wear every day that is practical to work in & cuts out me having to think about what to wear. I love simple dresses with a tight waist & full skirt & I love those 1940s/50s pinnies that housewife's used to wear when at home.
I love your dresses. Perfect for dressing up or down, hot or cold weather.

I think that, to me, a staple is something that is flattering and that I can always count on to look good. Fads change with the seasons, but something like a nipped waist dress or full 50's skirt is always going to work for me. :)
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love your clothes! Crossing my fingers! :)

Living in Southern California I find it important to dress according to the weather. More often than not, it is real hot where I live so my "staples" tend to be loose fitting/boxy/trapeze cotton/rayon sleeveless dresses (mainly from the 90s) that hit above the knee in all sorts of prints! I Or I also wear mini dresses that are a bit too short with high waisted shorts for easy moving. It's cute, comfortable, and practical! That is why I love your Lucy dip dyed dress! (seeing how it fits my aesthetics when it comes to dressing).

p.s. I love your shop! All your pieces are so wonderful and unique!

My go-to staple is usually a pair of good fitting jeans. I own jeans in a few different sizes and styles since my weight tends to fluctuate and I can't stand it when they don't fit right. I think the thing I like most about wearing jeans is that they're an easy option, but it doesn't mean my outfit will be boring. And I always feel comfortable in them (both physically and emotionally) which to me is the most important thing when I get dressed. That's not to say I don't love wearing dresses and skirts too though. ;)
ReplyDeleteMy current staple are old Levi's jeans. They are flared, high waisted and fit well at the waist (something that never happens with other pants because of my body shape).
ReplyDeleteI have two pairs of these, one used to be dark blue and the other is light washed. They have been passed since my teenage years from my mother, to me, to my mother again and at last to me ! Each time my weight or my mother's weight changed in fact ;)
What I love is that I feel comfortable and feminine in them and that I know they will last.
My dream staple item would be something that I could wear for casual occasions and in the evening for more formal occasions. It should be slightly fitted, soft on the skin and not too overly cute (but a little though) !
And on a more pratical note, it could go in the washine machine.
My absolute staple: cardigans. Buttoned up, they make flirty long-sleeve shirts, and unbuttoned, they're the perfect way to top off a shy dress! My current favorite is a deep eggplant cardigan; who knew purple could go so well with everything?
ReplyDeleteLove your clothes, and keeping my legs and ears crossed!

Hello Josephine!
ReplyDeleteOh, I truly enjoyed reading this post. Your thoughts about people in centuries past, when those 3 or 4 dresses felt really special and brought with them hundreds of stories, reminded me a bit of when I was little. My mom used to sew each and every pretty frock for me, she is such a perfectionist and would only make very few of them, even because she didn't want me to get used to having access to too many, of course. Each of her creations treasured many adventures and I remember all of them. Also, having just a few dresses pushed my creativity and sense of style, as every day offered me a new way to play with my little wardrobe and mix my staples together to create something fresh.
My favorite was a navy full skirt with a bow on the waist, made with the softest wool. It went with everything, it was so versatile, ladylike and comfortable.
Today I possibly own too many dresses, but the love and memories I treasure in each and every one of them didn't change. And what makes a garment a staple are always the same words: cozy, practical, pretty and long lasting through the years.
Ale

My staple is my red cambridge satchel (embossed with my name which is only two letters). It adds a punch and personality to everything I wear. Especially in winter when mostly what I wear is either black or grey.
ReplyDeleteI am in LOVE LOVE LOVE with your Mountain Dwellers Dress, I just know it would keep me super warm all winter xx
This is something I think about a lot too, because I've noticed that I'm always attracted to bright colours and quite wacky designs, but when I'm getting dressed I usually pull on something less attention grabbing. Like - I realised my most worn item is a very plain black skirt that I bought out of necessity, yet it goes with everything!
ReplyDeleteLast Winter I shook things up with wearing more shorts over stockings. I'm still searching for a good Summer staple, a dress that I can just throw on without thinking when it gets stinking hot!
I am so in love with your designs, they all seem so classic and made with such thought and care. The Mountain Dwellers Dress is my current fave!
For me, it's a dress in a solid colour. No matter what mood I'm in, a nicely constructed solid colour dress is the easiest item in my closet to gravitate towards. Not only does it automatically make me feel put together, but it goes so well with everything else! It makes mixing and matching accessories that much more fun.
ReplyDeleteRight now, I am in love with your Lucy Dip Dyed dress! It fits that criteria above, so well, but in addition, the dip dye adds a level of interest.
Thank you for hosting this giveaway!

Simple cut, plain-coloured dresses are always a go-to for me! They are smart and ladylike, but not too fancy. My linen Gorman tunic is the current fave. thanks for the entry x

I remember reading The Virgin Suicides for the first time. I was haunted by Cecilia's ghost for a long time afterward. One day while browsing around I found a very old white lace dress. It was tattered and torn, but it reminded me of Cecilia. I brought the dress home and kept it stored away. In the meantime I was practicing my sewing and mending clothing. Over the course of a few months I had bit by bit mended the white dress and even added a few touches of my own. It is simple, so that I would be comfortable wearing it with a few sweaters and jackets I have. It isn't quite like the description Eugenides gave or even like the dress which was worn in the movie. It's my own version. I only wear it on a whim, whenever I fancy it. So I guess you couldn't call it a staple in my closet, but I always keep it there should the time ever be right to wear it.
ReplyDeleteI noticed the names of a few of your dresses in your Etsy shop and was going to write you there, but then I noticed the post about the giveaway. I thought this was the perfect place to share my story with you.
For me, nothing beats that perfect dress which is both flattering and fun! It certainly seems I'm not alone on this one!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your wonderful giveaway - I'll be spreading the word on Facebook

Dear Josephine,
ReplyDeleteI have been thinking the exact same as you for the past month! I know I am coming to the tail end of this, but wanted to comment before it ended! I am like you in that my moods with clothing are all over the place. I wish I could just stick myself into one mood and stay there, but then I venture off. I do tend to really love vintage pieces and stripes, of course! Lately I've been wearing skirts and basic tops as the weather is warming up here. I have found linen skirts are definitely something I need more of in my wardrobe. They are flattering and cooler to wear. Anything that is flattering and low maintenance is a staple for me! But I am still trying to figure out my dream wardrobe full of all staples! I just adore your whole collection and I see them as being the perfect staple wardrobe! xoxo

i love dresses! any dresses that are shades of light (white, cream, ivory, etc.) with lace details. especially, if they happened to be three quarter sleeves and can be worn as a double duty piece are a plus. if i'm able to tuck in my dresses into my high waisted trousers, jeans, or shorts without making me looking awkward on my lower body portion than it's perfect.
ReplyDeletealso, i've shared this post on my facebook--mai ko and tagged you in it too!
