i love dresses! any dresses that are shades of light (white, cream, ivory, etc.) with lace details. especially, if they happened to be three quarter sleeves and can be worn as a double duty piece are a plus. if i'm able to tuck in my dresses into my high waisted trousers, jeans, or shorts without making me looking awkward on my lower body portion than it's perfect.

Dear Josephine,
I have been thinking the exact same as you for the past month! I know I am coming to the tail end of this, but wanted to comment before it ended! I am like you in that my moods with clothing are all over the place. I wish I could just stick myself into one mood and stay there, but then I venture off. I do tend to really love vintage pieces and stripes, of course! Lately I've been wearing skirts and basic tops as the weather is warming up here. I have found linen skirts are definitely something I need more of in my wardrobe. They are flattering and cooler to wear. Anything that is flattering and low maintenance is a staple for me! But I am still trying to figure out my dream wardrobe full of all staples! I just adore your whole collection and I see them as being the perfect staple wardrobe! xoxo

I remember reading The Virgin Suicides for the first time. I was haunted by Cecilia's ghost for a long time afterward. One day while browsing around I found a very old white lace dress. It was tattered and torn, but it reminded me of Cecilia. I brought the dress home and kept it stored away. In the meantime I was practicing my sewing and mending clothing. Over the course of a few months I had bit by bit mended the white dress and even added a few touches of my own. It is simple, so that I would be comfortable wearing it with a few sweaters and jackets I have. It isn't quite like the description Eugenides gave or even like the dress which was worn in the movie. It's my own version. I only wear it on a whim, whenever I fancy it. So I guess you couldn't call it a staple in my closet, but I always keep it there should the time ever be right to wear it.

I noticed the names of a few of your dresses in your Etsy shop and was going to write you there, but then I noticed the post about the giveaway. I thought this was the perfect place to share my story with you.

what a wonderful wonderful post, so refreshing to hear you actually care & not just the "future generations spiel" which to me boils down to I don't have to take responsibility now. I def know what you mean about the shipping but I figure it often goes under planes w/ passengers... & at worst case am w/ u on being SO much better than factories. one of my fav water/energy savings is to only use cold water for showers in the summertime/now (it's roasting in Phoenix : ), forces me to be speedy w/ my water use & of course uses no resources & for paper... I keep all the paper I absolutely had to print out or others had to and cut it into little pieces & use a clipboard so I always have note paper... have you heard of eco balls? that's what we use in the wash, saw a comment above gave another option but anyway I'm rambling sorry, again thanks for a wonderful post & for taking a stand about something so important. Beautiful beautiful work also : )

For me, it's a dress in a solid colour. No matter what mood I'm in, a nicely constructed solid colour dress is the easiest item in my closet to gravitate towards. Not only does it automatically make me feel put together, but it goes so well with everything else! It makes mixing and matching accessories that much more fun.

Right now, I am in love with your Lucy Dip Dyed dress! It fits that criteria above, so well, but in addition, the dip dye adds a level of interest.

This is something I think about a lot too, because I've noticed that I'm always attracted to bright colours and quite wacky designs, but when I'm getting dressed I usually pull on something less attention grabbing. Like - I realised my most worn item is a very plain black skirt that I bought out of necessity, yet it goes with everything!

Last Winter I shook things up with wearing more shorts over stockings. I'm still searching for a good Summer staple, a dress that I can just throw on without thinking when it gets stinking hot!

My staple is my red cambridge satchel (embossed with my name which is only two letters). It adds a punch and personality to everything I wear. Especially in winter when mostly what I wear is either black or grey.

Hello Josephine!

Oh, I truly enjoyed reading this post. Your thoughts about people in centuries past, when those 3 or 4 dresses felt really special and brought with them hundreds of stories, reminded me a bit of when I was little. My mom used to sew each and every pretty frock for me, she is such a perfectionist and would only make very few of them, even because she didn't want me to get used to having access to too many, of course. Each of her creations treasured many adventures and I remember all of them. Also, having just a few dresses pushed my creativity and sense of style, as every day offered me a new way to play with my little wardrobe and mix my staples together to create something fresh.
My favorite was a navy full skirt with a bow on the waist, made with the softest wool. It went with everything, it was so versatile, ladylike and comfortable.

Today I possibly own too many dresses, but the love and memories I treasure in each and every one of them didn't change. And what makes a garment a staple are always the same words: cozy, practical, pretty and long lasting through the years.

My current staple are old Levi's jeans. They are flared, high waisted and fit well at the waist (something that never happens with other pants because of my body shape).

I have two pairs of these, one used to be dark blue and the other is light washed. They have been passed since my teenage years from my mother, to me, to my mother again and at last to me ! Each time my weight or my mother's weight changed in fact ;)

What I love is that I feel comfortable and feminine in them and that I know they will last.

My dream staple item would be something that I could wear for casual occasions and in the evening for more formal occasions. It should be slightly fitted, soft on the skin and not too overly cute (but a little though) !
And on a more pratical note, it could go in the washine machine.

My go-to staple is usually a pair of good fitting jeans. I own jeans in a few different sizes and styles since my weight tends to fluctuate and I can't stand it when they don't fit right. I think the thing I like most about wearing jeans is that they're an easy option, but it doesn't mean my outfit will be boring. And I always feel comfortable in them (both physically and emotionally) which to me is the most important thing when I get dressed. That's not to say I don't love wearing dresses and skirts too though. ;)
